tonight, i was thinking to myself: "where the heck is basia bulat these days?". i'm itching for her to put something new out soon.
this was on her FB page and is helping to tie me over until she graces us with awesomeness once again.

see you somewhere.
this a particularly sweet tribute to nora ephron by lena dunham.
favourite line:
"you can't meet someone until you've become what you're becoming."
calendars.
i love this poem by jim harrison, taken from his book, in search of small gods:
calendars
back in the blue chair in front of the green studio
another year has passed, or so they say, but calendars lie.
they're a kind of cosmic business machine like
their cousin clocks but break down at inopportune times.
fifty years ago i learned to jump off the calendar
but i kept getting drawn back on for reasons
of greed and my imperishable stupidity.
of late i've escaped those fatal squares
with their razor-sharp numbers for longer and longer.
i had to become the moving water i already am.
falling back into the human shape in order
not to frighten my children, grandchildren, dogs and friends.
our old cat doesn't care. he laps the water where my face used to be.
best sweatshirt ever.
if i suddenly come into a shit-tonne of money, i'm buying all of my favourite people this sweatshirt.

sarah polley.
sarah polley was recently on Q discussing her new film, "take this waltz". she and gian spent most of their time talking about the ups and downs of romantic relationships. if you're interested in film-making and you're also interested in the intricacies of love and marriage, you may find this worth a watch.
favourite quotation: "we're at our most embarrassing when we're in relationships".

the serious best.
last week, i was thinking about mailboxes and wondering if they will ever become obsolete. on most days, all i get in mine is a pile of junk mail and the occasional bill. but today is not most days. today, when i opened up my mailbox, amidst the pile of flyers for pizzerias and 2 for 1 eye wear, there was a small envelope, with my hand-written name and address on it. upon seeing it, my heart did a tiny, little jig of glee. and then my grumpy inner voice said something like: "don't get excited, it's probably nothing".
and then my cheery inner voice said: "maybe... but it sure looks like something!".
and as i took it out and held it in my hands, it even felt like something.
a client whose hair i cut a little while back had sent me this:
is there anything better than the feeling you get when someone goes out of their way for you?
there is not.

unlimited options.
sometimes, i feel like an artist who hasn't found her medium. or one who has too many mediums. do you ever feel like that? let's imagine for second that every tool was at your disposal, and that you had the means to create anything you wanted. what would you do?
can i tell you what i'd do? i'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that i can.
there are so many things...
i think i'd have a web series or a TV show. it would probably be not unlike this blog but in video format. me, likely with a co-host, maybe the occasional guest, chit-chatting about life, and what's awesome and what's shitty about it. i would hope that it would be equal parts funny, touching, useful, ridiculous and thought-provoking. would you watch "the bright red hoodie show"? you could be a guest!
also, i'd record some of my little songs.
if i had a better camera, i'd take portraits of everyone i love and make a book of them. just one copy, for me. maybe i'd do this throughout my whole life and have different volumes. then, when i'm very old, my portrait books would keep me company in the old folks' home. i'd run around with them, trying to get people to sit down and look at them with me: "hey ethel! check out the lashes on this beautiful man i once loved!", "didn't my mother have the warmest eyes you've ever seen, henry?!"
umm, what else?
i'd probably make little videos about the lives of the most interesting people i know. maybe a sort of day-in-the-life of each person. and i'd make them tell me how they got to be so clever at whatever it is they're clever at. photography, songwriting, graphic design, health, whatever. and we could all watch and learn and be a bit more clever in that area too.
i'd probably have a line of accessories. bags and jewellery.
i'd work on a big project made out of cardboard. have you ever watched the making of "the science of sleep"? it's in the special features on the DVD. michel gondry brings a bunch of his friends to his summer house and, together, they build the cardboard set for the dream sequences in the film. i'd want to do something very close, if not identical, to that.
is this a stupid game? maybe. but i still want to know what you'd do so please share. or just keep it to yourself. but, seriously, it'd be way more fun if you shared.

warby parker.
i'm so overdue for a new pair of glasses; it's getting to be a bit embarrassing. i've had my current ones for 12 years. 12! years! i try to wear them only when no one else is around. to be fair, up until recently, i didn't really need to wear my glasses very often, just for the usual driving at night and watching movies or TV. but grandma's not getting any younger over here and neither are her eyeballs.
i've been on the hunt for new glasses for a while and was recently introduced to warby parker.
this is how it works:
you pick 5 frames from their site.
they send them to you.
you have 5 days to figure out which ones you want.
you send them back to them and they send you the ones you picked with your prescription in it.
they're in the states so it's cheaper if you live there - $100.
if you're in canada it's $120 + $10 shipping. i don't know how much duty is on top of that but even if it's a lot, your grand total should still be cheaper than most glasses you'd get at the opticians here in montreal.
also, if you go onto their site, you can upload a photo of yourself and virtually try on different frames.
ok, that's all i've got for now. bye!

you are surely special.
i truly don't mean for this blog to turn into a place where i post old songs that i love but... maybe just this one last time... on the chance that this song also has a super soft spot in your heart.
according to my ex, and, apparently, to a blog post by patrick pentland, the lyrics of this song are actual excerpts taken from a box of kurt cobain's fan mail. twice removed remains, to this day, one of my favourite albums.
also, have i ever mentioned my crush on andrew scott? when i worked in television, i interviewed sloan, and andrew and i had on identical, army green jackets because... you know... we're cool like that. i made them sing me happy birthday because it was the day before my 31st birthday, and... well... the camera was rolling so they didn't really have a choice, did they?
18 years later, i still think this song is a little gem.

instagram.
i caved and joined instagram. i didn't, initially, really get the point of it and, once, even googled: "instagram what's the point". i just figured that if i'm already posting photos on facebook why would i join another thing i have to check everyday but... it's more fun than i expected.
i'm nadynek if you want to follow me.

the places that scare you.
i'm reading this book right now and it's kind of blowing my mind. i actually bought it a few years ago but hadn't gotten past the first few pages. but then it started showing up on my radar again. at first, i saw it on a list of brené brown's favourite books. then, it was on a list of books that a julien smith recommends. so i gave it another go, and now i can't put it down.
